Program Overview

Why Study Social Work at TFC?

The Social Work concentration in the Counseling Psychology degree program allows students the opportunity to gain a broad perspective of the field of Social Work. Through their studies, students gain a better understanding of social problems within the community, family advocacy, and policies and their effects on certain populations.

Graduates from this program are prepared to better serve with a community agency right after college, or to enter a Master’s of Social Work graduate program.

Student Testimonial

My experience in the Social Work program at TFC has been the best. I came into this only knowing that I wanted to help children but wasn’t sure of the avenues I needed to take. Now, I understand the variety of options available and what my next steps are. The professors always want to help, and getting to learn from them has made me love the program and the opportunity to learn at TFC. One of my favorite moments was when a group from Counseling Psychology got to attend the AACC conference. This opportunity allowed us to have a better understanding of career options for each of us and talk about how we will impact the communities where we work one day. To someone who is considering studying Social Work, my advice is to talk to the professors and students at TFC. They will help answer all of your questions and show you the many exciting options that are available.

Career Options

What can you do with a Social Work Concentration?

The counseling psychology degree programs at TFC are uniquely designed to provide students with the skills they need within the framework of a Christian environment. Our graduates are able to work closely with their clients in an empathetic and compassionate manner, and they are able to rely on their Christian background in order to provide them with faith-based counseling services. In addition, they develop practical skills, such as how to evaluate a client, how to maintain accurate records and how to develop a treatment plan that is customized to meet the needs of the individual. The Christian counseling psychology degree is a specialized degree program that prepares graduates for a successful career in their chosen field. Some of the counseling psychology jobs that are available include:

Social Work

A clinical social worker may work in a school, a hospital, in private practice or for a non-profit organization. They advocate for the needs of their clients and work to connect them with helpful community resources. The Department of Family Children Services is a frequent field of interest for social work graduates. Students would be prepared to serve as a child protective service, foster care, or adoption case-manager or numerous other positions including roles within case investigations or social services administration.

Career Counselor

A career counselor is another option for counseling psychology degree holders. A career counselor works with individuals to provide them with advice and guidance as to the next best steps in their career.

Group Counselor

A group counselor often works with clients in group-based settings, facilitating discussions and helping group members learn how to relate to one another.

School Counselor

A school counselor works in an educational building, often helping students cope with challenges that they are facing at the time and assisting them as they work toward their academic and personal goals.
