Why Earn a M.A. Marriage & Family Therapy Degree?

Want to prepare personally and academically to become a licensed counselor in Marriage and Family Therapy? TFC’s Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy (MAMFT) develops clinicians with the skills necessary to provide professional therapy. Students learn the skills of ethical, competent, and compassionate therapy within a multicultural, integrated Christian framework. Our marriage and family therapy master’s program meets the requirements for licensure established by the Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage & Family Therapists.

Alternatively, students also have the option to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with the addition of two elective courses. Our marriage and family therapy degree online allows anyone to graduate, while still managing existing personal and professional responsibilities. Students who earn their MAMFT open the door to a wide range of career possibilities. Graduates will find work as a counselor in clinics, substance abuse treatment centers, schools and private practice. Be sure to explore the courses offered as part of the MAMFT program.

A Note on the COAMFTE Accreditation Process:

After the MAMFT program was launched by the Gary D. & Karolyn J. Chapman School of Graduate Studies in the Fall of 2021, it was recognized and accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

After ensuring that SACSCOC accreditation was in place, plans were developed for the MAMFT program to pursue initial accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE).  COAMFTE requires all programs to collect data on graduates, student learning assessment outcomes, and implementation of policies and procedures.  After successfully graduating our first cohort of students in May 2024, our MAMFT became eligible to submit a letter of intent to pursue accreditation with COAMFTE.  Our program was designed to adhere to the rigorous requirements and guidelines set forth by COAMFTE, and we are currently pursuing this designation as we review the eligibility criteria and data we have collected.

Current students and program alumni, please note that if a student graduates prior to the program receiving COAMFTE accreditation, the student will be grandfathered in under the accredited program once accreditation is received.  If you have questions about the status of COAMFTE accreditation efforts for the MAMFT program, please contact JBrodarick@tfc.edu
