Special and Unusual Circumstances
Special & Unusual Circumstances
Toccoa Falls College recognizes that a household’s current circumstances may not be accounted for on the FAFSA. The Financial Aid Office may adjust a student’s FAFSA data or cost of attendance to account for the student’s situation. There are two categories of unique situations that may warrant adjustment: special and unusual circumstances.
Special & Unusual Circumstances
Special Circumstances refer to the financial situations that justify an aid administrator adjusting data elements in the COA or in the EFC calculation. Examples of special circumstances include, but are not limited to:
- Loss or change of employment or income
- Excessive out of pocket medical and/or dental expenses
- Costs associated with a student’s disability
- Childcare expenses for a child of the student
Unusual Circumstances refer to the conditions that justify an aid administrator making an adjustment to a student’s dependency status based on a unique situation. Examples of unusual circumstances include, but are not limited to:
- Parental Abandonment
- Parental Mental Incapacity
- Physical or Emotional Abuse
- Parental Incarceration or Institutionalization
