The TFC Music Department is pleased to host a FAME First Steps in Music certification training course for music educators.  The course is designed to train educators in the “how’s” and “why’s” of the First Steps curriculum designed for parents and practicing elementary music educators.  The First Steps in Music for Preschool and Beyond curriculum provides activities for children as young as three but appropriate for any aged child that needs to further develop their tuneful and artful abilities. Folk songs and rhymes, as well as classical music, are the primary source materials that are used to develop their musical minds and abilities.

The Feierabend Association for Music Education (FAME) was founded in 2012 to celebrate and share the unique teachings of Dr. John Feierabend with a wider audience of music educators.  Dr. Feierabend, a recently retired Professor of Music Education at The Hartt School of the University of Hartford, is considered one of the leading authorities on childhood music and movement development.

This three-day workshop will take place July 23rd-25th and presented by Dr. Missy Strong.  Dr. Strong has joyfully served as an elementary general/vocal teacher since 1995.  She is also the Director of Children’s Music Education at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, overseeing Schola Cantorum, the weekly music school for Grades 1-6, as well as weekly preschool music classes.  She frequently mentors young teachers and consults with churches and schools looking to implement music programs for children.  Missy has presented several workshops and has addressed groups of parents and caregivers of young children regarding the importance of live music-making in the family and the community, a topic that serves as her primary research interest.
