Toccoa Falls College is thrilled to congratulate our Sustainable Community Development program on its recognition as one of the top Sustainability programs in the country. TFC was recently recognized as #9 on Best Value Schools’ Top 14 Bachelors in Sustainability Degree Programs in 2021.

The Lawson Center for Sustainable Community Development integrates biblical principles with sustainable economic and environmental practices. Students not only learn practical skills in urban gardening, aquaponics, and animal husbandry, but they are also equipped to plan and carry out sustainable development for community leaders in a wide range of environments. As an extension of TFC’s Global Ministries Department, this program produces graduates who can meet the needs of people groups across the world and can help leaders identify and create sustainable solutions for their communities.

We recently spoke with Chloe Weathington, a senior in the SCD program, about her time as a student and she stated:

Majoring in SCD and entering the Global Missions Department meant stepping into the most supportive and loving community I have ever been in. Each professor is highly educated in their field and has years of experience, which is one of the most valuable resources as a student. Their office doors are always open to help students with work from any class even if it’s not their own. Personally, my professors have been with me every step of the way through some of the most challenging times in my life, have opened their homes to me, and have been eager to talk through life’s tough questions. They truly walk the walk and are amazing role models who show what it means to pursue God with excellence. With a major so focused on community, they have provided an exceptional example of what it means to build a loving community and how to make it work beyond our textbooks.

Recently Chloe was given the opportunity to do independent research on beekeeping, and through this research was able to establish a colony on campus that students are now gathering honey from. We are thankful for the energy and commitment that our SCD students and professors bring to this program, and their desire to constantly be improving and growing. They are an inspiration and a source of peace to so many on campus, and we once again want to congratulations them on this well-deserved achievement!
