Reflection: Called to Teach in a Changing World
Teaching is a calling. It is difficult to undervalue the importance of passionate, purposeful, qualified teachers in our school systems. A good teacher can uplift a child’s self-image, abilities, and sense of impact on the world. Teachers have the opportunity to turn a classroom not only into a place of learning and advancement, but also a sanctuary of peace, fun, creativity, and joy.
Toccoa Falls College seeks to produce teachers who empower their students, encourage them to succeed in school, and advise them on navigating life’s challenges. Yet, as we look at the teaching profession landscape, especially in Georgia, we see educators navigating expanding responsibilities and greater pressures in their daily work. While many do so with dedication and care for the students they serve, these growing demands have contributed to higher burnout rates. As of December 2024, Georgia public schools were short of approximately 5,300 teachers. While it is essential to advocate for improvements that support educators, we also recognize the need to train and equip teachers with a deeper well to draw from.
Psalm 27:4 reads,
“One thing I have asked of the Lord,
That will I seek after:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord
All the days of my life,
To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
And to inquire in his temple.” (ESV)
Psalm 27 is a psalm of confidence. It is a psalm of unwavering trust in the Lord despite life’s challenges. This confidence is not only a strong foundation for a teacher’s career but also a virtue to inspire and encourage in the classroom. While many of our graduates enter secular schooling environments, we wholeheartedly believe in the power of the Holy Spirit to work through believers who pursue their work excellently, with the joy and hope that confidence in Him provides. For many students, their school experiences shape their perspective, and Toccoa Falls College is committed to ensuring teachers recognize the power of a well-rooted classroom. Toccoa Falls College’s Teacher Education Department combines the practical skills needed to be a successful teacher with biblical and theological training that provides a strong foundation for building a classroom and a career.
Not only are students spiritually prepared for their work, but they are also well equipped in practice. Students in the Teacher Education Department experience a uniquely Christian learning community while also receiving hands-on training with in-field experiences and clinical practice. TFC is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and the Teacher Education Department is accredited by the Professional Standards Commission of the State of Georgia (PSC). Graduates are immediately eligible for teacher certification upon graduation. Additionally, Teacher Education majors in their senior year may complete a one-year, paid student-teaching internship with the Stephens County School District. This opportunity provides real-world experience, preparing students to enter the workforce competitively upon graduation.
Toccoa Falls College’s Teacher Education programs are offered both on campus and online, providing flexibility for students in different seasons of life while maintaining the same commitment to academic excellence, spiritual formation, and hands-on preparation. Whether students are preparing to serve in traditional classrooms or balancing coursework with other responsibilities, TFC equips future educators through accessible pathways grounded in faith and practice.
As education continues to expand and grow, Toccoa Falls College is dedicated to producing graduates who are capable of expanding and growing alongside it. Christ-centered and kingdom-focused teachers can change the landscape of education. Please join us in continual prayer for the students and alums of Toccoa Falls College as they pursue their work with a holy perspective.
