After a few years of postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Toccoa Falls College’s Music Department is excited to once again host the “First Steps in Music” summer workshop. This certification course is available to locals and national elementary music educators, and will take place in Gate Cottage from July 11th-14th, 2022.

John Feierabend’s First Steps in Music curriculum is designed to prepare children to become “tuneful, beatful, and artful” for the rest of their lives. This research-based, practitioner-proven curriculum helps guide students to sing, chant, dance, feel, express, and play their way to musical independence. Folk songs, rhymes, and classical music serve as the primary source materials used to develop musical minds and abilities. First Steps in Music contains everything needed to lead a music class for an infant/toddler, preschool, or early elementary classes. Participants will become well-versed in the 8-Part “Workout” lesson framework of First Steps in Music as they take a deep dive into Singing and Movement Development in the early years. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded an official certificate from the Feierabend Association for Music Education (FAME).

The instructor for the course will be Dr. Missy Strong. Missy is the Host and Executive Producer of the Music Ed Amplified podcast. She has been an elementary general music and choral teacher for 27 years. Missy holds a Doctorate in Music Ed with an emphasis in early childhood development from Rutgers University and is an Endorsed Teacher Trainer with the Feierabend Association for Music Education. A frequent clinician, she presents at the collegiate, international, regional, state, and local levels and is a published author with GA Publications and Oxford University Press.
